Persian Rug History
Persian Rugs are traditionally known for their tremendous variety in design, color, size and weave. Moreover, they are known for the uniqness of each and every rug produced. Rugs are generally named after the village, town or district where they are woven or collected, or by the weaving tribe in the case of nomadic pieces. Each rug’s particular pattern and weave are uniquely linked with the indigenous culture, and weaving techniques are specific to an identifiable geographic area or nomadic tribe.

Every Rug is selected by Hoss Kouhestani, Managing Director and founder of Kiwi Persianrugs Ltd, during his journeys through Persia. Since every Rug expresses their unique culture, the journey can take a long time sometimes up to two months.

How Rugs are made
All Oriental rugs, to be classified as such, must be handmade. They are made of different types of wool, on different types of loom (kargah), with many types of dye in a wide range of patterns, and under many different circumstances.
All of these factors combined tell something about a rug and its identification.
Persian Rugs are woven in all areas of the country and cover the entire range of nomadic, village and city weaving.
The major characteristics of Iranian rugs are:
- Knot type: Symmetric and asymmetric
- Knot density: Coarse to fine, 30-1000 knots or more per 6.5 cm square (1 square in)
- Warp and weft fibers: Wool cotton and silk are used.
- Dyes and colors: the entire spectrum is used.
- Size of rug: All sizes and shapes are produced.
- Types of design and pattern: All types of patterns and designs are used.
- Technical features: All types of edges finishes, warp and weft fibers and fringes are found.
Materials
Rug weavers use many types of fiber; the most common are wool and cotton.
Wool is the most common fiber and is used for the warp weft and pile. It is dyed and used to create patterns. Cotton the next most common fiber, is manly used for the warp and weft. It is infrequently found in the pile, but when used is an important identification factor.
Silk is the most expensive fiber used in rugs and may be used for warp, weft and pile. Because Silk can be spun very finely it is often found in the most finely knotted rugs.
